Boy_1.jpgAutism is only one of three Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), including Asperger Syndrome and “pervasive developmental disorder – not otherwise specified” (PDD-NOS). Autism is a developmental disability that affects behavior, social skills and communication skills caused by a problem with the brain’s ability to process information. A child with Asperger Syndrome is delayed in mental development and language while children with PDD-NOS do not meet the full criteria to have either Autism or Asperger Syndrome.

Approximately 1 in 10 children have an ASD, and while there is no cure for ASDs, these children can advance developmentally. The scientific cause of autism is unknown, but early detection and access to services is the best treatment.
